National Science Week 2009

"As Chief Scientist of Western Australia, my mantra is 'Do Science, Translate Science, Communicate Science'. The latter is particularly important as scientists are frequently called on to do more in communicating their science to the public, not just to increase the awareness that science is being done, but to improve the understanding of science. This is integral to engaging with business, industry and the community. Effective science communication serves the public interest by allowing individuals to understand how results in scientific and medical research can affect their lives, and brings to light information affecting public well-being. One outlet I use for communicating science is ScienceNetwork WA. This website provides easy access to information on current science issues in WA. It has a section for the 'Chief Scientist', which features a monthly story on exciting science in WA and a cache of photos from interesting and important science events. As Chief Scientist, I have a keen interest in education and outreach to the community, and disseminating information to the public via ScienceNetwork WA keeps people informed and up-to-date."
