Time:  18:30 - 19:30
Where:

Category:

Description

n 2007 Tim undertook an amazing journey to retrace Australian polar explorer Sir Douglas Mawson’s incredible polar survival journey of 1912/13. The modern day expedition was a scientific detective story involving using the same clothing, equipment and starvation rations as Mawson to find out what had enabled Mawson alone to survive when the others died. The expedition was made into a successful film and book, providing answers to what happened down on the ice almost 100 years ago including whether Mawson in addition to eating his dogs had broken the ultimate taboo and resorted to cannibalism.

Tim combines a love of adventure with a passion for environmental issues – a passion demonstrated through his work as an environmental scientist, public speaker and explorer of many of the planet’s remotest places.

Science permeates most aspects of human endeavour, and it is therefore imperative that the wider community has the opportunity to understand the values and methodology of science and technology. Scientists have a professional responsibility to communicate scientific ideas and knowledge to the community.
